Deep in the Kimberley region, a survey team has uncovered an extensive panel of rock art believed to be among the oldest ever documented on the Australian continent. Initial dating suggests the works are at least 17,000 years old.
The find was made almost by accident, when a helicopter pilot ferrying supplies noticed unusual shapes on a sandstone overhang. Returning the next morning with the expedition lead, the team realized they were looking at dozens of meticulously preserved figures.
Local Indigenous custodians have been actively involved in every step of the investigation, and traditional owners describe the site as "a living archive of our ancestors."
